Carly from Portland:

I moved to Portland from California this past May when I was 8 months pregnant. As the sole income-earner in my family, I felt very fortunate to still qualify for the Paid Family Leave program through the state of California. Without that, I would not have been able to take more than the 6 weeks covered by State Disability Insurance (SDI), which is not nearly enough time. In California a woman first gets paid for 6 weeks from SDI, and then an additional 6 weeks from Paid Family Leave, which is part of the State Disability Insurance program. As a mom who plans to breastfeed for the 1st year, having time to bond with my baby was invaluable.

It is important to hear from real people about the need for Paid Family Leave. Please share your story about caring for a new child or sick family member.  How would Paid Family Leave have helped your family?
